Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year in the US from September 15 until October 15. This is a month that honors the Hispanic and Latino community and recognizes their cultures, achievements, and contributions. From cultural events to food tastings, people are using GoFundMe to celebrate the Hispanic and Latino community all month long. Together, we can support Hispanic and Latino Americans as they continue to drive prosperity, power, and progress. Celebrate and be inspired by the stories below.
4 Ways People Are Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month on GoFundMe
1. Café Con Rumba: A show celebrating rich, cultural Hispanic heritage
“Café con Rumba: An Evening of Dance and Cultura!” is a show hosted by Sofia Bengoa and Valentina Guedez Delgado happening on September 14. The goal of this event is to form a space for the Hispanic and Latino community that awakens memories of home by celebrating and honoring its stories and vibrant culture. There will be 10 Latinx/Hispanic New York City-based choreographers whose works will be featured in Café con Rumba. In order to bring the show to its full potential, Sofia and Valentina created this fundraiser to raise money for production and theater expenses, and compensation for the artists involved in the show.
2. A food tasting of Latin cuisines for a second-grade classroom
Each year since she started teaching, Lili Nativi has hosted a “Cultural Tasting” for her second-grade class in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Since the majority of her students are Latino, Lili and her students celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about Latino creators and inventors, reading bilingual books, and enjoying cultural music and food. This year, Lili plans to have five days of various Latin food tastings. Since Lili has a big class, she started a fundraiser to help cover her students so they can participate in the engaging and important festivities.
3. Azucar: An all-Latine cabaret showcasing Latine voices
“Azucar: A Latine Cabaret Experience” is the first all-Latine burlesque revue show in Olympia, WA. The show, originally called “A Celebration of Latin & Hispanic Heritage,” was created by Latina K Turner D’ho and debuted at the Capitol Theater in 2018. Through performance art, the show thrives to spotlight Latine voices and celebrates diverse cultures. This year, the show is being held during Hispanic Heritage Month on September 16 at The Crypt Olympia. During the pandemic, Azucar was forced to pause its production. Because of this, the show is starting back at square one. The money raised for this fundraiser will go towards venue rental fees, professional photography and videography, compensation for performers, backstage snacks and beverages, and the show’s crew. Any extra donations will be used for future Azucar shows. Fundraiser organizer Latina Turner says, “I believe in my community and I believe in the power of the stories told by Latine artists through their art.”
4. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund: Supporting students and parents to achieve a higher education
The mission of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), founded in 1975, is to provide students and parents with the resources and information to accomplish a higher education, while also granting scholarships and access to helpful services to students, HSF Scholars, and Alumni. HSF mobilizes communities to reach its goal of making college education a top priority for every family in the US. HSF also equips its Scholars with the necessary tools for them to carry throughout their studies and beyond graduation as they start their profession and enter the workforce. Donations to HSF go directly towards its support and career services, programs, and scholarships for K-12 students, parents, HSF Scholars, and Alumni.
