‘1000 Feathers’ Therapeutic Play Project

Support my mission to help 10'000 displaced families experiencing trauma to begin their healing journey using this simple but wonderfully effective attachment play activities using feathers, proven to help children to slowly come out of the freeze response and build connection between main caregiver and child.

There are so many children and mothers suffering with PTSD. They are disassociated and have been described by local volunteers as having vacant expressions and unable to communicate play and interact with their children.

The mission is to equip and gently model simple games using feathers to the parents and children and give them a card with activities they can try out together.

Why feathers?

Feathers are small, light and portable as I travel around so I won’t run out so easily.

There’s nothing worse than arriving to a refugee centre with a small number of items with not enough to go around.

Feathers are small, the children can carry them in their pocket as they go to a new school or new home. They are a biodegradable, natural substance, hard to break, gentle, non-threatening, can’t run out of battery and can be found out in nature if lost.

We want children to feel seen by their parents or new caregivers and safe again. This will take time and there is no quick fix, however the sooner we intervene the better.

Following on from the successful visit to work in PTAK Centre, Warsaw with hundreds of families. We now hope to train professionals and volunteers on the ground with the foundational PAUSE, PLAY, CONNECT Course that includes learning a handful of therapeutic attachment games they can use with virtually no additional resources. This second round of funding will go towards creating and recording the training resources online and a trip back out to Europe to extend the research and train some of the professionals in-person.

The money will be spent developing resources that can be sent digitally across the globe and added to play packs handed out to refugees in the UK and beyond through partner agencies. Play Packs can be created with tried and tested therapeutic play activities that will help families to heal and thrive again.
