Most people know Tim and Cheryl Hieatt as avid motorcyclists but to my sister and I they are known as Mom and Dad. Recently they have been taking annual motorcycle trips to The Smokey Mountains. The first evening they decided to go for a relaxing ride, then head to Butt's on the Creek (Dad loves his BBQ) for dinner, but they never made it there.
On the evening of August 11,2016 our Mom and Dad experienced an unimaginable event. As our father made a left hand turn, he heard a gasp and a scream in his headset that was interrupted by the sound of a crash. He looked into his rearview mirror only to see his wife being hit from behind by a drunk, uninsured, unlicensed driver. Our father immediately ran to his wife who was thrown thirty to forty feet from her motorcycle. Thankfully she was wearing her helmet and was still alive and aware of what had just happened. She had seen the car coming.
Mom was taken to a local hospital in Sylva, NC and was soon transferred to a trauma hospital in Asheville NC. She was beat up pretty bad including 2 spinal fractures, a pelvic fracture, severe road rash, large internal hematoma, a blood clot in her leg, and a broken finger. Our mom was hospitalized for a week and was required to spend another week in an inpatient rehab hospital in NC so she can endure the car ride home. However, she still has a long road of recovery ahead of her and will require a lot of medical attention to recover. We thank God every day she is still here with us.
Due to the fact that the driver was drunk and a two-time loser with no valid license and no insurance, driving a vehicle with no valid tag; owned by another loser with no valid license and no insurance, our parents insurance will cap out short of the mountain of medical bills that are sure to follow them home. They are currently pursuing vehicular assault charges through the Jackson County D.A. office. Hopefully this will keep him off the road and busy protecting his jailhouse virginity.
We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and just know that any donations would be greatly appreciated.
