My name is Gabby Caruso and I am Denise Karsten’s daughter. To know my mom is to know unconditional love, loyalty, patience and support. My mom has been a rock for my brother, Danny, and I, along with so many others throughout her life. She has always been our strongest support, challenging us to think situations through, act with kindness and do our best. She has spent her life making sure people around her felt heard and understood when she interacted with them.
For those of you who don’t know, my mom has been a nurse and chiropractor for 45 years. She currently practices as a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner at Upstate Cancer Center. To my mom, nursing is about figuring out the patients’ needs medically, spiritually and emotionally in order to be the most effective and advocate when caring for them.
Three weeks ago, after a whirlwind of tests, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer as well as a brain aneurysm. Both the cancer and the aneurysm will need to be surgically addressed but first, she will need to receive 3 rounds of chemotherapy. It is anticipated she will need chemotherapy after surgery as well. Mom has some of the best physicians and surgeons caring for her, as she has worked with them over the years.
Mom’s plan of care includes an immune supportive specific diet, chemotherapy symptom management and treatments that are not covered by insurance. With anticipated surgical procedures at Roswell Cancer Center in Buffalo, she will have an extended medical leave of absence from work. We want you to know your contribution will help my mom receive this care and decrease the financial burden for our family.
We were hesitant to create this Go Fund Me page, but the overwhelming voice by many of her friends, colleagues and our extended family asking what can I do, how can I contribute, and how can I help, prompted its creation. We appreciate the volatility of today's fiscal world and if there is another way you would like to help, please contact me. Please be assured, any unused funds will be paid forward to cancer research.
