Conjoined Twins: Please Help Our Butterflies Soar!
We knew we were expecting twin girls and the day of their birth came with great anticipation.  When our beautiful “butterflies” were born in the Dominican Republic, however, we got the shock of our lives.

Our girls, Ballenie and Bellanie were connected at the lower back.  They were conjoined, a rarity that happens only once in over 200,000 births. We were confused, scared and desperate to find help for our “butterflies.” 
Thankfully, we found Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, in New York.  The hospital said they could help Ballenie and Bellanie and could give them brighter futures. Like all parents, we would do anything for our children so we uprooted our lives – left our home and our jobs - and came to the United States so Ballenie and Bellanie could be given a chance to have a better future.

We are happy to say Ballenie and Bellanie were successfully separated in a 21-hour surgery!  They are doing well and on the road to becoming beautiful, independent young women.
That road will be a struggle for Ballenie and Bellanie, however, because, due to their previous condition, additional surgeries and special care are vital.  We gave up everything for our girls and want to ensure they have food, a home and the medical care they need.  Our family is starting from scratch, and we hope you will help our butterflies survive, thrive and not feel burdened by the condition with which they were born.

Siamesas: ¡Por favor, ayude a nuestras mariposas a volar!

Sabíamos que estábamos esperando niñas gemelas y el día de su nacimiento vino con gran emoción; Cuando nuestras hermosas "maripositas" nacieron en la República Dominicana, sin embargo, tuvimos el impacto de nuestras vidas.

Nuestras niñas, Ballenie y Bellanie estaban conectadas en la parte inferior de la espalda. Nacieron unidas, una rareza que sólo ocurre una vez en más de 200.000 nacimientos. Estábamos confundidos, asustados y desesperados por encontrar ayuda para nuestras "maripositas."

Afortunadamente, encontramos el Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, miembro de la Westchester Medical Center Health Network, en Nueva York. El hospital dijo que podría ayudar a Ballenie y Bellanie y que podría darles un futuro más brillante. Como todos los padres, haríamos cualquier cosa por nuestros hijos, así que dejamos nuestras vidas (nuestro hogar y nuestros trabajos) y llegamos a los Estados Unidos para que Ballenie y Bellanie tuvieran la oportunidad de tener un futuro mejor.

Estamos felices de decir que Ballenie y Bellanie fueron separados con éxito en una cirugía de 21 horas! Se encuentran muy bien y en el camino a convertirse en hermosas jóvenes independientes.

Sin embargo ese camino será una lucha para Ballenie y Bellanie, porque, debido a su condición previa, cirugías adicionales y cuidados especiales son vitales. Dejamos todo por nuestras niñas y queremos asegurarnos de que tengan  educación, comida, un hogar y la atención médica que necesitan. Nuestra familia está comenzando desde cero, y esperamos que ayuden a que nuestras mariposas sobrevivan, prosperen y no se sientan agobiadas por la condición con la que nacieron.
