The Barrio Fridge

Donation protected

In the months since the launch of our GoFundMe, The Barrio Fridge team has sourced farm fresh and organic produce serving as a means to not only fuel but heal our community through food. We’ve rescued end of day bread in a tropical storm, started growing rescued oyster mushroom mycelium bricks in Humacao Community Garden, our neighborhood garden, and shared a few delicious recipes with our neighbors along the way.

The fridge has facilitated an opportunity for our community to share eggs, milk and dry goods with one another. It’s been stocked with donated meals from neighbors, restaurant partners, celebrated chefs, even The MET Museum!

Today, we have a more clear, accurate projection of costs to keep Her operational. Expenses vary from transport stipends for volunteer drivers to recruiting our retired resident electrician to make sure our beautiful indoor fridge perseveres in the outdoor elements. We are definitely in the thick of Summer! We will continue to use money raised to support farmers by purchasing produce on days that our fridge is empty because it is an important resource to our community. The Barrio Fridge collective does not pay personal expenses with money raised. We have not been personally compensated. There is no payroll.

It’s been exciting to watch our fridge blossom! To keep this work sustainable, we have decided to increase our GoFundMe goal with the hope of expanding our impact and reach in El Barrio. This will continue to cover ongoing costs. Partial funds will also be used to design and produce The Barrio Fridge merch including reusable tote bags. Proceeds will go towards refrigerator costs.
