Building A Community Center in Newark for Newark!

Tax deductible
Please join us in bringing a critical and empowering change to the residents of Newark, NJ! We are raising money to benefit Alpha Alpha Lambda Community Development Inc., a community resource development arm of the Newark chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. - specifically in the development of The Alpha Community Center of Newark, NJ.

The development corporation was formed in 2017 to further the work of Alpha Phi Alpha in order to enhance, expand and improve our ability to provide community-based services in Newark, NJ based on our local and national programs that promote education, voter registration, youth mentorship, and economic empowerment.

Alpha Alpha Lambda Chapter, also known as the Newark Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded in 1926. One of the original 14 members who chartered the chapter, well known for his work in the Newark community, was William Ashby, who also was instrumental in the founding of the Urban League of Essex County and the United Way of Essex West Hudson. Alpha Alpha Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has been providing community services in and around Newark for 93 years.

Our vision is to build a community center that connects with and serves the needs of Newark residents through fostering community partnerships with other community-based non-profit programs as well as corporate social responsibility initiatives around the city. The city of Newark has seen our vision and recently approved the purchase of this land for the development of this community center. To date, the Brothers of the Newark chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. have raised $200,000 of their own funds to help jumpstart this project. Now, we ask for your help as well!

Cities such as Harlem, Brooklyn, and Jersey City were all once hailed as unsalvageable. Boasting high crime rates and unlikely returns on economic investment. Today, the story has and continues to rapidly change - and same is the happening in Newark, NJ. The wave of gentrification, historically, has often swept through once impoverished neighborhoods and left the people original to those neighborhoods behind.

Demand for local affordable meeting, business, and community event space for family and organizational events is particularly high in Newark, with many opting to hold events outside of the city when unable to find affordable spaces. The major source for many is hotels and restaurants where outside catering is not an option. Those looking for smaller venues for baby showers, wedding receptions, fundraisers, graduation celebrations, etc. have few affordable options. We would like to be able to provide local residents with a community space that could accommodate their ever-growing and ever-changing needs.
