Ana's Alaskan Adventure

Hello Friends and Family,
As most of you know, my name is Ana Wodek, my hometown is Suttons Bay and I am an upcoming graduate of Michigan State University. I am studying Fisheries and Wildlife here at MSU and I have one final “Experiential Learning” credit requirement I need to fulfill before receiving my actual diploma at the end of the summer. Two days after “walking” in May, I will be voyaging out to a very remote and rural location known as Shell lake... located in the amazing state of ALASKA! I have officially accepted a position working for the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association and I will be sampling, monitoring and performing scientific research on Sockeye Salmon and Northern Pike.
I will be “roughing it” in the backcountry for two months and sleeping in a weather port, which is a step up from a tent-like structure. Alaska is no joke, and being prepared is vital so I need to have reliable equipment for this endeavor. I received my check-list from the CIAA, and there are many items I do not already own such as; hiking boots, a camping backpack, a thermal sleeping bag, waders, waterproof apparel and much much more. I am coming up with a good portion of the money on my own but after researching the web for everything I still need for this journey, including pricey airfare and the extra 2 credit tuition cost, the expenses are quickly adding up.
This year has been extremely hard and I am financially independent…like most college students today; I pay for almost everything on my own. Between tuition, rent and bills I have reached my max and I cannot ask the bank for another loan. I made a personal decision to be home more with my dad during his sickness in these past few months and although I do not regret that choice for a second, I was unable to obtain a source of income. While trying to balance school, a job and mentally holding myself together right now, this upcoming opportunity truly couldn’t of come at a better time to help me to look forward to something and stay positive.
Reaching this goal would help me in more ways than you know and I will be forever grateful for any type of help. This Alaskan adventure is exciting and overwhelming all at the same time, but I am so appreciative and humbled to be able to have this chance to prove myself in this career path
Thank you!
