Appleton, WI, which is frequently named along with the best places to live in the US by magazines such as Forbes, is truly a wonderful place to live. The rankings are attributed to many, many factors including cost of living, job opportunities, community and lifestyle. It’s in the details such as the annual "Avenue of Angels" that help to keep us on those lists.
To many residents, the lighting of the angels have become a Christmastime tradition that goes hand in hand with the nighttime Christmas parade, always the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and annually drawing 80,000 spectators. For the residents of Appleton, the lighting of the angels signals the beginning of the Christmas season.
The tradition started in 1960 with a set of angels that were put on display and put up annually until 1978. From 1979 to 1990, the angels were changed out for large candle decorations, but in 1990, the angels returned with huge public support. Over the years, the angels faced being taken down permanently due to disrepair and lack of funds. The cost to maintain or replace the angels was just not in the city budget. See the story below:

Thanks to a generous donations by Frances Burstein in 2003 then again by her family after her passing in 2012, the angels are back, restored and gracing three of the downtown intersections along with thirty eight (38) single angels on the light posts along the avenue.
This year, J. Geiger Consuting, Inc. is leading an effort to fund the refurbishment and installation of another set of angels to be placed at one of several College Avenue intersections (State, Walnut, Division, Morrison or Durkee). The angels will be rewired with LED bulbs along with any other needed repairs. New cabling and building mounting hardware will be installed if necessary. Final determination of which intersection will be made after assessment of the infrastructure.
J. Geiger Consulting, Inc. has pledged $1000.00 towards the $8,000 goal, will promote the fundraising and will work with Creative Downtown Appleton, Inc. (501c3) on logistics with a goal to have funds raised by early 2019 and restoration work done in time to showcase the new intersection at the 2019 nighttime Christmas parade.
The costs break down as follows:
$ 6,000 Restoration
500 New Cables, Clips
1,000 Building Installation Set Up &Maintenance Fund
$8,000 Total per intersection
Please join us this 2018 season in raising the funds necessary to refurbish and install another set of angels by the 2019 Christmas season and help us add a little more sparkle to downtown. An attempt to create a plaque to recognize donors for donations of $1000 or more will be made.
All funds will be distributed to Creative Downtown Appleton, Inc., a not-for-profit community coalition dedicated to support the Appleton creative economy movement by enhancing the cultural and artistic environment through the development of opportunities for community access to arts, music and culture. .
