I am a civil rights attorney who represents the family of Benjamin Chase, who was tased, while unarmed and without cause by an Excelsior Springs Police Officer. Benjamin later died alone in police custody under suspicious conditions on Mother's Day.
The family has now filed a Civil Rights Law Suit to redress the unlawful deprivation of Benjamin Eli Chase's right to life.
Funds raised here will be used to offset the cost of certain damages incurred by Benjamin's family in response to this unimaginable tragedy and loss.
These damages include but are not limited to funeral costs, lost wages/earnings, professional services, travel, lodging and expenses.
The Associated Press Reported, attorney Matthew T. Merryman for the family of Benjamin Chase said “his relatives want to know the cause of death and more about the use of force before his arrest.”
In a statement shared with The Kansas City Star by Matthew T. Merryman, the family said they were “disappointed but not surprised” by the outcome of the investigation.
“The conclusion that Benjamin died of an overdose 18 hours after being taken into custody is unbelievable and requires further investigation,” the statement said, also noting that this death occurred on Mother’s Day. “The family hopes that law enforcement will share all (investigative) materials so that the truth about Benjamin’s death can be discovered.” “The family will endeavor to ensure Justice for Benjamin is obtained and that Black Lives Matter in Excelsior Springs,” they added.
