Build A Wheelchair Ramp For Alice!

Donation protected

Update: You all helped to raise the full amount of the fundraiser in under 4 days! We are deeply grateful for your generous support! Alice's ramp has been fully repaired and she is now able to come and go from her home. This fundraiser was also responsible for giving her a headstart on purchasing an accessible van. Thank you all! And thanks to the hard-working men who donated their time and energy to rebuild the ramp.

Dear Community,

Alice, an Asheville resident, has been trapped inside her house for years, afraid to risk using her deteriorating ramp to get outside.

The ramp's boards are rotten, some having fallen through entirely, making the ramp completely unsafe and unusable. Though Alice has daily, in-home care, an adequate wheelchair ramp is her only access to the outside world, which she has gone without for too long.

Alice has spinal muscular atrophy and has been unable to walk since she was 13 years old, after a life-saving spinal fusion surgery.

She is an aunt to two nephews, a cat mom, an avid reader, and a photographer.

"I would be overwhelmed and grateful if we got the ramp fixed. I just want some dignity and autonomy, and to enjoy some quality of life again," says Alice.

If the ramp were fixed and Alice could leave her house again, she says that she'd like to get outside to do photography (she can only take so many photos of her cats), visit her nephews and friends, and shop for clothing that fits her right. She says, "I want to enjoy what life I have."

The funds raised here will cover the cost of materials for rebuilding the ramp. Volunteer labor has been offered. If there are remaining funds after purchasing materials, they will all be given directly to Alice to go towards a wheelchair-accessible van.

How much do we, as people with adequate accessibility or non-disabled people, take for granted our ability to simply go outside of our homes? Please donate whatever you can to help Alice get the accessibility she needs and deserves!
