Burning away mental health stigma, one step at a time

Protecting not only our community but also our members is our mission and as such Carnduff Fire Department (CFD) offers services for members with mental health conditions including anxiety, PTSD, and depression.

Marcel Macfarlane, a 10 year firefighter with the CFD, living with clinical depression is one such member that has been assisted by those support services.

In an effort to raise awareness, lifting stigma for those that live with mental health conditions and to act as a fundraiser for Carnduff Fire Department, Marcel will be attempting the BigHorn 100 trail race June 14-15, 2024 held in Dayton Wyoming.

The 100 mile distance through the BigHorn mountains is considered one of the most difficult mountain ultramarathons in the US. Runners have 34hrs to complete the distance with 20500ft of ascent as they face steep and technical terrain, with large portions of the race course well known for heavy snow and deep shoe-sucking mud.

In 2019 Marcel experienced all the gruelling conditions of the BigHorn 100 and made it to 82.5 miles with just over 26hrs of running but the race had taken its toll and he could not go no further.

Driven by the DNF (Did not finish) and recovering from 2.5 years of injury, he is now backed by a great team for another attempt in 2024.
