Chesapeake Students Need a New Dock!

Tax deductible
Our dock has rot…lots of it!!  We need a new dock, now!

What are we asking? We are asking for donations. Send us a dollar, ONE DOLLAR. There are over 200,000 people in Chesapeake. We hope that the community will come together to help us with this need. We have rowers from Hickory, Grassfield, Great Bridge, private schools, and homeschoolers on our teams. This dock isn't just for one team or one school district; this is for them all.

Over the years, the Chesapeake Fire Department has been incredible about supplying old firehoses to protect our floating dock and the boats from being damaged while the parents and rowers volunteered to do maintenance and repairs to preserve what we could. Unfortunately, there is just no way to have a wooden dock last forever.

The school system does not fund our teams; the parents fund them.  During the COVID shutdown, we weren't allowed to row and our funding suffered as we were unable to collect due from the athletes or raise funds in the community.  As we all know, the rent was still due and insurance (which is very high for a water sports) was still required to cover our facilities and equipment.  As a result, we have depleted all of our funds to keep the programs running, and now we are asking you......Please, if you only give to one cause today - let it be us!

Who are we exactly?

Established in 1998, the Hickory Crew Club (Friends of Hickory Rowing Club) is a year-round, youth rowing program open to area students, grades 7-12. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit school-sponsored (but not funded) program, our club is 100% funded by our rower families through dues and various fundraisers relying on support from the local community to keep our club going.

The far east end of the Atlantic Yacht Boat Basin in Chesapeake, VA along the Intracoastal Waterway is where we call home.  Due to the nature of tidal waters (and our limited funds) we installed a wooden dock, built by our parents. As you would expect our shared dock has become a hazard to our rowers due to its rapid deterioration.  We share our boat house and dock facilities with two other unfunded school clubs and as a group, our clubs are dangerously close to exceeding our ability to keep the dock functional and safe due to the aging materials. These types of docks usually last 10-15 years (if you’re lucky) but we have long exceeded that!
