Alessia needs your HELP and LOVE!

Dear All
My name is Sonia and I am appealing to you for support.
My husband and my two children all have significant health needs and I am their primary caregiver. As their physical needs have increased, so too has the financial burden.
Our ongoing burden of financial costs to support my family's extraordinary needs have become overwhelming and I now need to reach out and appeal to the kindness of the community for their help in providing my family a quality and dignified life.
Here is our story….

My husband Tony is 49 years old and has Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.
The last few years have seen a rapid progression of the disease and with it deterioration in his ability to participate in his daily routines. He can no longer work and is now confined to a wheelchair. He requires physical assistance for his personal care and transfers. Tony’s biggest fears are now becoming reality as he copes with not only his physical challenges, but the psychological and emotional challenges of not being able to support his family as any father and husband would want to.

My son Cosimo is now 22 years and he has lived his young life with both a seizure and a learning disorder.
He faces may emotional and psychological challenges as he tries to find his way in a world that often expects more and assumes more than what he is capable of. He requires professional counselling to deal with his anger and behaviour issues so that he can better cope and continue to participate as a productive member of society. With this counselling support, Cosimo is able to work and participate in his church and other community functions with success.

In 2001, we suffered a devastating loss, something from every parent’s worst nightmare. Our beautiful baby girl Jesse passed away at the tender age of two, due to complications from Mitochondrial Disease and Congestive Heart Failure. While some families are torn apart from such a tragedy, we were strengthened in our love for each other and know Jesse continues to walk with us in our journey.

Our youngest daughter Alessia, now 13 years old, was diagnosed at the age of 18 months, with the same Mitochondrial Disease as her sister Jesse, as well as Seizure Disorder.  Despite the many physical and emotional challenges she must face, she is a happy and playful little girl who tries to live her life to the fullest. In the face of significant physical issues, her dream is to be independent, to spend time “hanging out” with her friends and to be able to walk on her own. Every step she takes, every exercise she does at home and in therapy, is another step closer to her realizing her dream. Her eyes brim with determination and pride in her achievements.

Our needs...

Despite our best efforts, with the limited financial supports we have been able to access, we have exhausted our ability to make our home accessible. Tony uses a power wheelchair and Alessia uses a manual wheelchair for their mobility. Each requires supportive equipment for bathing and personal care, transfers and positioning. Tony and Alessia are confined to one floor of our small bungalow as we do not have any access to our basement. Alessia wants, like every other pre-teen girl to spend time with her friends, away from her family. Because of her equipment and personal support needs, to see her friends they must come to our home. At this point, based on space constraints, this happens infrequently and they are always with the rest of the family. Tony and Alessia’s dependence on their wheelchairs for mobility we cannot go to other family or friends homes. An elevator would allow us to enjoy a typical life with extended family and friends with dignity. It would drastically improve our quality of life as a family and for each member individually.

I kindly ask for your spiritual support  and humbly appeal to your kind generosity for any financial assistance you can offer to assist my family with the various and many ongoing needs we incur such as:

1. Therapy: physiotherapy, osteopathy, horse therapy, Conductive Education, therapeutic suit therapy, counselling, nursing care and  PSW support.

2. Equipment: modified vehicle maintenance and upgrades,  hospital bed,  continuous power wheelchair maintenance and costs, shower commode, transfer lift, activity bench, therapy ball and therapy suit.

AND

3. Home renovations to improve accessibility for both my husband and children.

Thank you!
