My Emergency Medical Situation

I'm Craig, a photographer, who, in early January, found myself in emergency surgery for a severe blockage in my intestinal tract. I’m fortunate to be alive, truth be told.

 

Turns out, the blockage, an obstruction in my colon, will require surgery to remove. In the meantime, I was rewarded with an ostomy, which will be with me for the next several months.

 

While adjusting to life with an ostomy was complicated, I was managing to get around, till I had a prolapse of the stoma. I’m not going to describe it, but you can certainly find examples with a quick web search.

 

A prolapsed stoma took my situation from manageable to one where I’m more home-bound than I’m comfortable with. More time on the couch than in the world, making work difficult, at best.

 

I’m lucky that Heather is so willing to help me through the care of my ostomy, and to make sure I don’t exert myself. I wouldn’t want to go through this alone.

 

Some of you know that I went through treatment for colorectal cancer three years ago. So far, cancer markers in my blood work are low, so what I’m looking at is likely something more localized. But I’ll know more when I get scans in advance of surgery in March.

 

I was hoping to get through without a crowdfunding effort, but considering the situation I need to be realistic. We're going to need help getting through the next several months, which includes treatments/supplies not covered by health insurance, and for whatever co-pays and deductibles we're hit with.
