___________

Hi! My name’s Emmett and I am a trans dude from the UK.

I came out as trans in January 2019, shortly before my 26th birthday. Late bloomer, I know! It took me a really long time to discover why I never quite felt "right" or comfortable - but better late than never, eh?

There are fewer than 10 NHS gender clinics in my entire country (and up to half a million trans people in the UK) — I’ll be on a waiting list for a minimum of 3 - 5 years before my first appointment. I've been on that list since August 2019, so no NHS doctor is gonna be seeing me any time soon.

After that, it’d still be at least another year or so before I received any form of treatment. If I relied entirely on these services, I’d be well into my 30s before my outside could match my inside. And that’s before coronavirus slowed things down even more!

I don’t want to wait that long. I've already lived for 27 years in the wrong body and I don't think I can wait another 27!

That’s why I’m raising the money to go private.

As you may have noticed, transitioning certainly isn’t cheap! Turns out living as the most authentic version of yourself is a lot more hassle than you'd think.

Either way, here is a rough breakdown of how I’ll be spending your money. It's the least I can do.

PLEASE NOTE: My transition experience, like every other person in my position, will vary and some of the services listed below may not be available/necessary for me when the time comes. But if there's one thing I'm excellent at, it's anxious overpreparation.

PRIVATE SERVICE COSTS!

  • Doctor’s Assessments (£150 - £300)
  • Counselling (£60 per session)
  • Follow-Up Sessions (£50 - £150)
  • Blood Tests (£50 each)
  • Surgery Referral (£220)
  • Pre-Surgery Consultation (£200)

Fun Fact: There’s this thing called shared care, which is when my private doctor and GP can sometimes work together on parts of my treatment, which costs less and means I’ll get more bang for my (well, your) buck!

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT)!

  • Testosterone (gel): £40 - £70 per month (or up to £840 per year)
  • Testosterone (injection): £120 per injection (every 3 months — or £480 per year)

Fun Fact: A large chunk of my gender dysphoria (the feeling of unhappiness that comes from my body not matching my brain) comes from my voice! Taking testosterone will make my voice permanently deeper, as well as alter the shape of my body and make me fuzzier!

SURGERY!

  • Double Subcutaneous Mastectomy (£2800) - PAID*
  • Revision Surgery (free)
  • Blood Tests & Anaesthesia (£350)
  • Travel (TBC)
  • Accommodation Costs (£180)

*As of September 2022, I'm 9 months post-op and in need of some slight revision surgery to remove some excess skin and fatty tissue - don't worry, it's very common with us bigger guys. The travel & accommodation costs have been adjusted to reflect what I'll be paying for on this second trip.

Like many trans folks, I’m having to travel abroad in order to afford surgery due to costs in the UK being incredibly high. Money raised not only goes towards the surgery, but flights and accommodation for myself and a chaperone while I’m out there. I’ll be out of the UK for at least 10 days due to pre-consultations, daily post-op dressing changes and the fun old resting period. Better start brushing up on my Polish!

Fun Fact: After having top surgery, I no longer have to wear binders (special undergarments designed to flatten the chest) and can donate the ones I do have to other trans people who need them.
So, in helping me — you’ll be helping others too!

ADDITIONAL COSTS:

  • Gender Recognition Certificate (£5)
  • Male Passport (£80) — PAID!
  • COVID testing in Poland & England (~£50pp)

As you can see, the bulk of the money raised goes towards getting the old funbags removed — but once that’s all done, I’ll still require regular testosterone treatment, counselling and follow-up appointments for the rest of my life. As a result, the goal for this fundraiser will likely change as I check things off the list and figure out which path is best for me.

To everyone who’s donated towards, shared or supported my transition in any shape or form — I am so eternally grateful you exist. Thank you for helping me continue to feel happy in my own skin at last and help Emmett well and truly come to life. I’m so excited!

Thank you.

Love, Emmett.
