For the Love of Charmaine: Support her son Shane

Donation protected
With a heavy heart, we come to our family, friends, and community to share the transition of Shane Fuller’s mother, Charmaine Angelita Gordon. We are calling in our community to support the Gordon family as they navigate this unexpected tragedy.

A special message from Shane about his mom, Charmaine:
We did everything in our power to save her, and it still wasn’t enough. God moved mountains to get me to Jamaica so I could comfort her in her last moments in the ICU. My mommy is and always will be the strongest and selfless person I have ever known. She is a true woman of good character, family, and a community leader who did right by everyone she encountered. She is the walking embodiment of light and joy, and I’m so honored that she chose me to be her son. This devastating loss was untimely and has shaken my family and her loved ones to the core. My family is hurting right now and will be for a while. Please keep my family in your prayers, and if you’re able and willing, you can support us in covering the unexpected hospital, funeral, and medicine expenses accrued.

Shane Fuller is a giver, a life-affirming beam of light and positivity, a magnetic force of creativity, a powerful catalyst and activist for change in his global & local Newark community. A 27-year-old graduate of Montclair High School & Rutgers University-Newark, an artist, a singer, a professor, an administrator, a champion of youth leadership, a nonprofit founder, and a visionary leader.

Since his youth, he has organized and motivated his peers and others to serve their community through authentic self-expression, creativity, and community service. He has always put the needs of others before his own, be it through mentoring, volunteering, or shining the light on the accomplishments of others. His biggest fan was his mother. For although they had to live apart for most of his youth, nothing, not even an ocean of distance, could break their bond of love for one another.

Early in the pandemic, Shane visited his mother in Jamaica, and then the lockdown ensued. He ended up staying for several months with her, the longest consecutive period of time he had ever spent with her since age 11. What could have been a harrowing time, Shane used to make up for lost time from all the years they missed out on during his adolescence. They were able to do profound healing and bonding. Then he returned stateside to resume his life and pursue his dreams. When he left, his 50-year-old Mama was vibrant and healthy, just sad to see him go. That was three months ago.

On Wednesday, September 1, out of the blue, he reached out to his friends and family for prayers. “Hey fam,” he said, I’m gonna need prayers for my mom. She got diagnosed with COVID. No panic, just prayer for healing.

On Friday, September 3, he reached out again, requesting, “Hey y’all prayers into overdrive, please if you can.” His Mom had gone from being at home not feeling well to being admitted to the local public hospital for difficulty breathing. Her oxygen levels had dipped as low as 35%! Doctors gave her oxygen and sustained levels between 60%-80% and wanted to put her on a ventilator, but none were available.

Shane spent the next day on his phone texting and calling anyone he could to manifest a bed at a hospital with a ventilator. He texted again: “If anybody wants to touch and affirm the healing of my mom and for miracles to come through plz let me know.” Shane’s spiritual community immediately got on zoom and went into fervent prayer.

On Saturday, September 4th, Shane reached out that morning to inform his close friends that prayers were answered. His mom was transferred to a private hospital with a non-invasive ventilator at 12:30 AM, and her oxygen levels had increased from 60% and sustained at 80-90%. Despite being alone, terrified, and quarantined in an under-staffed COVID ward anxiously awaiting a miracle, she was improving.

On Sunday, September 5, with the help of his mom’s employer, he worked all day to find the medicine, get a permit for the medication to be released and received a bill equivalent to his life savings of $10,000 to afford the medicine, pick up and purchase the medication, get a COVID test and secure a flight to ensure that he delivered the medicine within the next 24 hours. Shane dropped everything, went into laser focus, and, by the grace of God, made what seemed impossible possible to give his mother a fighting chance. On Monday, September 6th, at 7 am, Shane boarded his flight with a medical permit, medicine, PPE supplies, and a negative COVID test in hand. He was by her side by noon that day and successfully delivered the medicine within 24 hours! Glory be!

Shane shared that her oxygen levels had reached as high as 94% and that doctors had administered the medicine. He was encouraged by the progress and grateful to be by her side finally. We were all feeling confident that she was turning the corner and heading toward a full recovery.

On Tuesday, September 7th, family and friends received this text: “My mother passed away this morning. We did all that we could to save her, but God had other plans, and I’m staying faithful because at least now she isn’t in pain & I have gained a powerful Ancestor in my mother who loves me eternally.”

Today, Thursday, September 9, we are still shell-shocked, standing in the destructive wake of COVID with yet another Mother torn from her only son because of this pandemic. We mourn the loss of Charmaine Angelita Gordon, an Earth Angel who brought the sunshine through her smile, the starlight through her eyes, and gave her son his reason for being. We are heartbroken and grateful that this son could see his mother one last time.

The hospital will not release her death certificate until the bills are paid. We welcome any support our family, friends, and community can provide to help this courageous and faithful young man cover the $10,000 medication, $20,000 of medical fees he incurred trying to save his mother’s life, and $10,000 to support with transportation and funeral costs. Thank you in advance for your powerful prayers and generous donations to help ease the pain and lighten the load of this Earth Warrior.
