Raising money for a lawyer

My mom is trying to hire a lawyer to help her get a restraining order against our former landlord.

On Saturday, November 4th, my stepdad and our landlord told my mom we were going to the landlord's house to look at a couch he wanted to sell us. When we got there the landlord spend several hours yelling at us and during this time he made several threats against my mom. One of them being he would put her in the ground where no one would find her. Then my stepdad and the landlord kicked my mom and I out and expected us to sleep in the car. As we were leaving he told my mom that if we went back to the house there would be consequences and that he could end her.

On Sunday both my stepdad and the landlord made threats of throwing our things into the trash if we didn't come get them right then and there.

Monday morning my mom filed a police report, just to make sure that what had happened on Saturday was documented in case there was any problems when we went to the house to get our things. A few hours my stepdad called my mom and as soon as she answered the phone the landlord started threatening my mom telling her he was going to come to her work and eliminate her. My mom talked to the deputy that took the first police report and it was suggested that she file a restraining order against the landlord.

When she went to the magistrate's office to fill out the paperwork they told her she should seek the help of a lawyer. That these were serious threats and that she would have a better chance of the restraining order being granted if she had the help of a lawyer.

Today, November 10th, we went to talk to a lawyer. He told my mom that she has a better chance of getting the restraining order and for a longer protection time with his help. He also wants to help her with everything else that happened that night.

The lawyer is giving her a discount on the price because he seen how scare my mom is, but it's still going to cost $2500 to help her.
