In January of this year, we completed a new project under nearly impossible conditions. Over the course of 5 weeks, we launched the very first Latitude Adjustment Podcast Academy with asylum seekers on the Greek isle of Lesvos. This required students to access classes by phone, from inside their tents, locked inside a crowded and often-flooded refugee camp, in the midst of a COVID quarantine, while only a third of the students were able to follow in English. Without funding, we graduated 9 podcasters who successfully published episodes in English and in Farsi (<a href="https://www.latitudeadjustmentpod.com/podcast-academy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">listen to the episodes here</a>). We are unaware of any other initiative of this kind. The response has been both positive and immediate. But the demand for our podcast training is now more than we can manage with our current resources. And that’s where you come in, as our loyal listeners. Help displaced people become podcasters! Why teach displaced people podcasting? -Podcasting is a uniquely accessible, cost-effective, secure, and versatile medium for reaching an international audience. 


-Unlike print media, podcasts can be consumed almost anywhere and during any activity. 


-All elements of production, distribution, and audience-engagement can be done online, making podcasts “COVID-proof”.


-We aim to put the narrative back in the hands of the people, offer them ongoing mentorship, and provide audiences with clear action items and platforms to interact with our producers. This last point is critical as community-building is essential to deconstructing narratives of other-ness.


-Our beneficiaries are already using their podcasts to advocate for freedom of movement and to end the stigmatization of refugees in Europe.
