Fundraiser for Hiruni's Breast Cancer Treatment
I’m Midula Sivakumar raising funds on behalf of my brother & sister-in-law. My brother and my sister-in-law, Hiruni & Tarshan, had been working in Singapore for about four years. After being in a relationship for the past six years and knowing each other for over 15 years since school, they finally tied the knot in November 2020. They were full of excitement, looking forward to where their careers and life might take them. Little did we know of what the future actually had in store for them.
In January 2021, Hiruni went to Mount Elizabeth Novena to check a lump in her breast. The reports identified that the breast lump needed intervention. They conducted more tests at the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in March 2021, which identified an Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in the left breast lump.
After a full body CT scan and a PET Scan of the bones, the oncologist concluded that the cancer was a Stage IV metastatic Breast Cancer. The estimated cost for Hiruni’s treatments in Singapore to keep the cancer from spreading was over 5000 SGD per month.
Hiruni’s health insurance didn’t cover cancer treatment, and my brother would have been unable to bear the cost on his salary alone. So, with heavy hearts they decided that the best course of action was to fly back home to Sri Lanka, where the cost of treatments would be cheaper.
On 23rd April 2021, they landed in Sri Lanka, and Hiruni started her hormone treatment at the Asiri Surgical Hospital in Colombo. Under this treatment plan, Hiruni needs to be treated with Letrezole, Zoledronic Acid, Zoladex and Palbociclib every month for 5 years or more. In addition, she also took radiation therapy for her pelvis and spine to relieve the persistent pain. So far they have spent close to 10,000 SGD for all tests in Singapore, and almost 10,000 SGD in Sri Lanka for hospitalization, radiation and medicine.
Currently, My brother is on No Pay leave from his job in Singapore. Due to limited support, He has to be in Sri Lanka with Hiruni to help with her mobility and pain. Hiruni herself will not be able to work for a few months until her pain subsides. We are seeking financial assistance of 65,000 CAD to support Hiruni’s treatments, radiation therapy and other related medical/surgery expenses for the next two years.
