Help a West African Village Upgrade Its School

Donation protected
My name is Baba Ly, I live in South Portland, Maine in the United States, with my family.

I was born and raised in Mauritania, a West African country where I spent my elementary school in a classroom like in the picture below, in a small village called Tessem, located on the Senegal river in the southern border of Mauritania.

I have not returned to this village of about 800 people in more than 20 years and It's breaking my heart to learn that this is what’s left from the school I have known and made me who I am today.

Now, I hold two master degrees in science and technologies, including one earned from the University of Poitiers in France. These last 15 years I have worked for different corporations/institutions (for-profit and non-profit), including Coca-Cola Company, the U.S. Embassy in Mauritania, Catholic Charites Maine and now I work as a Senior Program Director at Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine. You can also follow ETHICS' (Empower The Immigrant Children and Students) Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/ethics.maine.5 a non-profit that I founded in 2017.

Because of the lack of the White Moors (Arab population) led Mauritanian government's interest in funding vital infrastructures in the southern region of the country populated by Fulani (Black), the local population rely very often on international non-profit organizations to fund such needed schools, hospitals and provide other vital resources.

To have a context about the racial discrimination and oppression of black people in Mauritania please read this link: https://www.middleeasteye.net/big-story/mauritania-senegal-river-refugees

I believe that the education is key to building a brighter future for anyone regardless who they are and where they do live. This is what my native village has lost over the past 30 years, leading to sacrificing an entire generation’s future.

To give back to the community that kick started my successful journey, I wanted to launch this fundraising campaign in order to rehabilitate the vanishing Tessem’s elementary school.

Today the school has 2 classrooms and is serving 85 children from age of 8 to 14 with ONLY one teacher in. The classrooms have minimal broken tables and chairs, some students sit on floor carpets. Educational resources are almost inexistent.

Therefore, on behalf of ETHICS, I wanted to raise $5000 to provide the existing classrooms with new tables, chairs and other classroom equipment.

Please chip in to support this noble cause. No matter how much can contribute, no amount of dollar is too small. Please share with friends and families and encourage them to help make this world a better place for those who are forgotten.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!
