Help Charlie and Blu recover from crash
Donation protected
Hi everyone, it's Jeremy, Charlie's son. I never thought I would have to create one of these so soon, but as we gain a grip on this new reality, we've come to realize we need all the help we can get.
On May 9th at about 10:30 EST, my father and his 1-year-old service animal/best friend Blu were struck head-on by a drunk driver on the wrong side of the road. After receiving an emergency crash report text, we went into action and soon found out he was being rushed to the hospital by helicopter, unconscious and in critical condition, as his blood pressure was so low that his heart was about to stop. Blu was also rushed to the nearest 24-hour animal hospital due to the injuries he sustained on his face, paw and possibly internally.
My father's most serious injuries are focused on his left leg. He was rushed into surgery as he was losing a great amount of blood from the artery in his leg, as well as it being severely broken in several places. The surgery for his artery went well. Thankfully, by the grace of God, he did not suffer any direct injuries to his head. As of the following morning, he is finally responsive, only able to move his eyes and his right arm slightly.
An X-Ray has shown a torn meniscus in his right knee, a broken rib and his left arm fractured in several places, which is his dominant hand. They’ve also said though the hit to his head wasn’t bad enough to show up in a scan, he could still have a concussion. He underwent a successful 11-hour surgery to reconstruct his left leg, his second of three. The following will be a skin graft for an open wound. After being discharged from the hospital, he will need to spend about 5-6 months staying at a rehabilitation center to recover and get his mobility back little by little.
Blu is doing okay. He is able to walk however he is on medication for his pain and will need X-rays to check for any internal injuries and to gain insight into how badly he was hit. I've been told he's whining and crying out for my dad. (They're normally inseparable)
My father is the most generous person I know and have ever met. He makes sure his family and everyone he loves are taken care of before him, including Blu. I honestly can't remember a time when he ever put himself first. He is extremely hard-working, spending his life doing manual labor as a general contractor, which means his body is his greatest and most important tool. It's what he has to depend on for basically everything. He truly cannot afford to not work. This already puts a daily strain on his body, but now his work will be put on an indefinite pause due to his recovery time. He will be in the hospital for about two weeks, but there's a very long journey of recovery to follow. We are hoping and praying that he will gain as much mobility back as he possibly can.
The money donated will be going towards my father and Blu's recovery, as well as any rent, bills and/or responsibilities he usually takes care of for himself. The driver responsible has only 10,000 in insurance coverage. We are currently looking into attorneys but there’s currently still no telling how much the person has in assets to cover any differences. As I've said, we are asking for all the help we can get. Anything truly helps, including prayer. Please spread this page in hopes to achieve our goal. Thank you in advance to anyone donating. We will provide updates as his condition improves.
