Two Shootings, Two Parents Dead & Two Orphan Kids

Hi, my is Vernel I started a Go Fund Me page because my sister (Jacqueline Burley) was brutally murdered “shot 9 times” in broad daylight on 2/23/2020 on the streets of Baltimore (Douglas Homes Projects) As of today, no one has been arrested for her murder. She’s cherished by a host of family and friends but most of all two children (Kavon & Kaleigh Washington) in which I’m the guardian of her youngest (Kaleigh) whom witnessed bits and pieces of her murder. This tragedy has caused Kaleigh to suffer from mental illnesses, such as; PTSD, Social Anxiety and Depression. Kaleigh and Kavon also lost their Dad to gun violence in Aug 2018.

 

Before all of this took place I had an amazing career in the medical field for over ten years. However, I wasn’t educated on this specific topic (Guardianship). It wasn’t explained to me until after our court date, the law states that if you choose to take guardianship of a relative (instead of letting them go into the system) you get little to no help. Little did I know, I lost my job, kids were home schooled and she was facing one of the most horrific moments in her life. I now realize the day my sister was murdered, I also lost my life in so many aspects, Unemployed, no transportation and facing homelessness.

I’ve fought this up hill battle for over two years trying to get some type of help to raise my niece (Before and after care, low income housing ETC). I’ve listened to broker promises from committee to committee. Now it’s time to speak out, instead of suffering in silence.  

 

I’m asking for help via Go Fund Me because I feel like this is a platform that can jumpstart broken families back to some type of normalcy. Reason being, limited to lack of support from your relatives, friends, city/county and state officials.
