Help Janet Get a Portable Oxygen Machine
Introduction:
I am DeAnn Derrick and my sister is Tijuan (Derrick) Bates. We are establishing a GoFundMe
account for financial assistance for our Mother, Janet , who contracted Covid-19 and has been
hospitalized twice. Mom had a severe case of Covid-19 which caused long-term health issues which
caused financial issues. She has been out of work, dealing with Covid-19 related issues and will lose
both her job and health insurance on June 21, 2021.
The Backstory:
Mom (Janet) was diagnosed with Covid-19 on March 23, 2021 and was immediately hospitalized for what
would eventually be one of two times.
Her initial hospital stay lasted six weeks, entire family was concerned and could not visit her
Her case was severe, eventually causing blood clots in both her lungs and heart
When discharged the first time she came home with medium size metal oxygen tanks
The tanks only lasted one hour (her doctor was 45 minutes away) and expensive blood thinners After a week and a half at home, she developed clotting issues and had to be re-admitted
Second hospital stay lasted a weekHer doctor indicated that she could be on both oxygen and blood thinners for up to a year
She has applied for short-term disability but is yet to be approved and receive funds
The Cost:
Mom (Janet) has insurance through her job, but it doesn’t cover the oxygen and expensive blood thinners.
There are four financial issues where she needs help - hospital bill, oxygen, medications and monthly household expenses:
Hospital bill - there’s $15,000 remaining on the hospital bill
Household expenses - average $2,700 / month, until she can return to work
Blood thinning medication - (Eliquis), $1,390 a month (for up to a year)
Oxygen tank refills - $214 a month (for up to a year)
The Goal:
We are
setting an immediate need goal of $8,000. Additional help beyond the immediate goal covering
prescriptions and some household expenses may be needed for a couple of months
Most critical need is freedom from the metal oxygen tanks, giving mom mobility and the potential to return to work.
Advanced Inogen Portable Oxygen Concentrator ($3,500), which is shoulder mounted fills this need
Remaining $4,500 of immediate goal covers household expenses for a month and prescriptions
We will provide periodic updates to goal achievement
How You Can Help:
We are extremely appreciative of any contribution big or small that you can make to help the family get through
this health and financial crisis. Please contribute if you can and send out the link to others on Facebook and
Instagram you think might be in position to help. Thank you.
