As a mom, you never want to have to resort to something like this for your child, but we have reached the end of our resources and don’t know what else to do. I know this is slightly long, but it’s so complex! Believe it or not, I have left out 90% of the details for your enjoyment!
My daughter Katelyn, has been battling her health for years with undiagnosed symptoms. Her and her doctor developed a plan of action to hopefully help alleviate some symptoms and in April of last year (after waiting 1.5 years!), she finally received gastric bypass surgery (AKA RNY). The recovery was hard from day one. Her body seemed like it couldn’t bounce back like it was supposed to. She was uncomfortably managing, but in May of this year, her health plummeted to rock bottom out of nowhere. It was scary. None of us knew what was happening to her body as she developed a laundry list of brand new symptoms along with all the old ones that come back with a vengeance. Her lack of insurance has stopped her from getting the care she needs since her case is complex and requires nothing but specialty doctors. She tried so hard to do the work to get the care, but reached a stopping point where she couldn’t go any further due to a lack of specialists that took her insurance. In six months, it seems as though she’s withered away. Although her weight loss had stopped from the surgery, she has lost an additional 40 lbs since May due to the pain, nausea, and discomfort associated with eating. She can barely eat or drink, has extreme stomach pain, wakes up drenched in sweat (and I mean DRENCHED!), has fatigue that could allow her to sleep 20 hours a day without any assistance from any substances and the thing that seems to concern doctors the most is her mysterious blood sugar problems. It’s dropped below 50 and gone above 220 many, many times. One doctor has diagnosed her with diabetes and the other disagrees! It’s as if she has had a stomach bug, covid, and the flu all in one for six whole months!! You can only imagine how exhausted the girl is. It makes it even more challenging that she still has a daughter to raise at home while pretending to the best of her ability that everything is ok. This has of course prevented her from working full time and keeping up with her bills. She has already sold her car to try to catch up, but is still facing eviction. Before all of this started, her bills were around $3,500 a month and they are solely her responsibility. She has fallen behind four months on her rent which is $1,500 a month. After late fees, this means she needs about $6,700 to stay in her current place. She was under the impression that she qualified for a financial assistance program that would pay three months for her. Unfortunately, she found out a couple of weeks ago that she was denied. The cards just continue to stack up against her.
I am helpless when I sit on the phone and listen to the tears just stream down her face. I have never seen my daughter’s heart so broken and her hope so dim. This is probably the hardest season of her life and all I want to do is be able to help my precious girl. She has spent the last 10 years of her life being of service to others and now I’m asking for our loved ones to show up for her. The good news is that as of Nov 1st, she finally obtained good health insurance (praise Jesus!) and has since seen multiple specialty doctors. It’s becoming a full time job to go to all the appointments and testing sites. We are hopeful that we can finally receive a proper diagnosis now, but that doesn’t fix six months worth of bills. I am asking for help so that my daughter can focus on her health without so many sleepless nights worrying about finances. I apologize for how long this is, but I want you to feel comfortable knowing exactly what you’re helping with! I have gone to most of her doctor’s appointments with her and seen how baffled they are! This is our very last resort to give her the room she needs to find a proper diagnosis. Prayers and donation’s would mean to world to our family….EQUALLY!!! We love you all so very much.
