Help Michael's Recovery and Martha's Resilience

Hello, my name is Madison Bosak. I’m raising recovery and medical funds for my in-laws, Michael and Martha Nowak. Michael has not been home since January 29, 2024. Michael is currently at St. Vincent Medical Center and is going to lose his leg.

 

After falling ill in January, Michael was taken to the emergency room where the doctors and nurses found a bowel obstruction and blood clots in his lungs and legs. After undergoing an emergency surgery, Michael began his recovery journey in February at a local rehabilitation center. Michael used physical and occupational therapy to try to increase his strength in hopes of walking again and returning home.

 

The first setback happened in March when Michael was taken from the rehabilitation center to the emergency room. He was running a fever and his blood oxygen levels had dropped. The doctors and nurses ran tests, and it was found that he had another blood clot and a UTI. After being placed on oxygen and treating his ailments, Michael returned to the rehab center.

 

In April, Michael was again taken back to the hospital. His bloodwork was showing signs of poor kidney function which was likely due to an infection. Michael was moved to a different hospital to run more tests and for him to be in a location where he could receive dialysis should it have come to that. Once again, after treatment, Michael was moved back to the rehabilitation center.

 

After another bout of back and forth between the hospital and the rehab center, an infection was located in Michael’s left leg and was treated with antibiotics. The infection was in the bone, but still, Michael was determined to fight (alongside some pretty serious meds) to keep the leg.

 

After a visit from the doctor this morning, June 19, 2024, and the infection intensifying, it was determined that amputating Michael’s left leg would be the safest and best course of action, and it will be taken tomorrow morning.

 

Michael and Martha have been married for 47 years. Due to Michael’s medical needs, Martha has found herself alone in their home for the first time in as many years. As hard as Michael is fighting to be well again, Martha is working just as hard to run their household and pay their bills.

 

This story isn’t one I share lightly. Michael and Martha are the types of people that will always put others before themselves, even in their times of need. And unfortunately, those needs are real and immediate. Even as Martha is currently praying for her husband’s safe surgery and healing recovery, the medical bills from the last five months are coming due.

 

I cannot heal Michael or remove Martha’s burden. So, since this is all I can do, I will. I am asking that you share as generously as you are able. I thank you in advance for your kind consideration on behalf of Michael and Martha whom we all love so dearly.
