Helping Aaron

Meet 10 year old Aaron. Aaron has brain cancer, Medulloblastoma to be precise. The diagnosis of brain cancer in September 2016 came as a shock to everyone and only three days after being diagnosed, Aaron underwent a 9-hour operation at Monash Hospital followed by 6 weeks of radiation at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. Aaron is now at the Royal Children's Hospital in Parkville where he is receiving chemotherapy treatment. As I write this, Aaron is in hospital receiving his second cycle of chemo as part of a clinical study.
Aaron and his mum Hannah, dad Craig and brothers Seth (16), Isaac (12) and Eli (2) are from Toora, a small country town in South Gippsland, Victoria. Aaron's family are very close and it is extremely important that they are able to be together and close by the hospital for Aaron. This has meant that Craig has had to take leave without pay from his job and the family are staying in short-term accommodation in the city. While they focus on Aaron's needs and juggle the demands of medical appointments and learning to administer feeds (Aaron has a peg in his tummy), antibiotics, nausea and pain relief medications as well as the strict infection control regime, Craig and Hannah still have to somehow pay the bills, their mortgage, petrol, parking, meals and normal daily expenses.
Craig and Hannah are proud people and it is extremely difficult for them to ask for help. Their friends at home all know that Craig and Hannah are among the first to offer help to others when it is needed and now it is their time of need. The small community of Toora have been fantastic in supporting the family, including arranging meals for the family when they have been at home and mowing their lawns. Now that they are in Melbourne and Craig is on leave without pay from his job, we need to ask the wider community to dig deep and help this family out because Aaron needs his family close by.
