Honoring "Mr. Marty" of Orlando's College Park

Donation protected
It is with great regret that we announce the death of one of College Park's most recognizable figures. Martin J. Burns (a.k.a. "Mr. Marty"), 76 years of age, passed away Wednesday, June 12th of an apparent heart attack. His mother, 97 year-old Dorothy Burns of Orlando, was concerned that he had not made his daily call to her and when he didn't return her call she and a friend drove to Mr. Marty's residence on Smith Street to find him already deceased - sitting at his dining table where he had been working on a crossword puzzle at the time of his death.

While few knew his name - most in College Park recognized Mr. Marty from his tricycle rides around College Park where he collected discarded items he might re-purpose and also picked up waste on the sidewalks and roadways. Mr. Marty assisted countless neighbors in-need of lawn service, food, repairs, etc. It was not unusual to catch a site of Mr. Marty driving around College Park in one of his classic cars - and his artistic side was always on display in his front yard for passers-by to enjoy. Many in College Park and beyond were fortunate to visit one of his numerous yard sales throughout the years and purchase one of those rare treasures Mr. Marty's astute eye had located and rescued - that he oftentimes painstakingly repaired/refurbished. His career was in healthcare and his areas of interest were vast and comprehensive. To say he was "a genius" would not be an overstatement.

Few leave such an indelible mark on a community. Rai and I consider it an honor to have known Mr. Marty and to have counted him among our friends. As we each  continue to take ownership and pride in our community - the spirit of Mr. Marty rejoices!

To assist his mother with the arrangements and handling of Mr. Marty's affairs we have set up a GoFundMe account.

Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.

Mr. Marty gave so much to our community - and this is  our chance to show our appreciation in return.
