Indiana University Student Film

Donation protected
In spring 2019, a team of Indiana University students will begin production on the short film "His Master's Voice." The short film has been partially funded by the Hutton Honors College here at IU, deeming it a significant creative work, and one that will positively impact the ongoing education of dozens of students by providing critical real-world experience. Seeing as southern Indiana has not traditionally been the place to find many big film productions in the past, experiences like this one are vital for students who wish to pursue careers in this field and give Indiana voices a platform in the sort of stories we typically find on television and in theaters.

"His Master's Voice" tells the story of an isolated  commune being confronted by backwoods locals and the escalating tensions between them that arise from fear, prejudice, and miscommunication on both sides. Told over the course of one night, this is a story that challenges our perceptions of outside groups and advocates for understanding in an increasingly divided world and, ultimately, for forgiveness and compassion found in the darkest of places.

For the few professional film productions that have come to Indiana in the past few years—many of which I and others on our team have eagerly worked on—community support is what made those endeavors possible. Because Indiana is a state that does not offer a tax credit for film productions, it is financially much more difficult to produce them here than in other parts of the country; therefore, each and every film production success story in our state is thanks to the generous support from local communities. We have seen this first-hand on the sets we have worked on, and we are eager and hopeful to engage with our community in these same ways now that we have the opportunity to do our own small part to build a growing industry in Indiana and give our state a powerful creative voice it deserves.

As we begin our work on everything from costume design, set design, casting actors and practical issues like figuring out how we can feed everyone on set, we know that all of this can only happen with the support from those around us. Any and all funds we raise will go toward renting equipment, securing filming locations and transportation, purchasing set decorations, props, and costume material, and film festival submission fees.

We appreciate any support you can offer and are grateful to everyone that is helping us provide a critical educational opportunity and make this film the best we can to share with others. Follow this page for production updates and other news as we begin filming!

ALL DONORS WILL BE CREDITED IN THE FILM'S END CREDITS!
