JAAC Scholarship Fundraiser 2020

We humbly request your assistance in raising $50,000.00 for our annual scholarship fund benefiting our young people.  Jamaica Awareness Association of California (“JAAC”), a California based 501(c)(3) organization that provides educational and a medical assistance in the United States and in Jamaica.  We have been in existence for approximately 33 years working in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.  Our local outreach in Los Angeles and surrounding areas includes sponsoring health fairs, providing annual scholarships as well as working with a number of other charitable organizations to assist the needy such as LA Family Housing, Salvation Army, and Inland Empire United Way, to name a few.  Our efforts in terms of educational support and outreach include providing laptops, tablets, computers, monetary scholarships, and school supplies to needy children.  Our members have also volunteered at local high schools and elementary schools to assist young people in their educational development.

JAAC also works internationally in sponsoring an annual Education and Medical Mission to Jamaica.  The goal of the Medical Mission is to bring health professionals who donate their time and expertise to the rural parts of Jamaica where health care is in a crisis situation.  Each year members of the organization attend to approximately 1,500-2,000 patients for the week in a clinic setting.  In 2005, JAAC initiated a laparoscopic training program for doctors in hospitals across the island. The organization continues to conduct this valuable training on each mission trip.

The goal of the Education Mission is to support young people in Jamaica as we do in the United States.  This involves providing computers, computer labs, laptops, scholarships and school supplies to children in many of the schools throughout the island.  These school supplies include backpacks, laptops, pens/pencils, books, and other school supplies.  The scholarships provided in the US and in Jamaica have assisted students in paying for school supplies, tuition, and meals.  The Scholarships are distributed annually to selected students in the United States as well as students in Jamaica through our scholarship selection process.  Throughout the years, we have awarded thousands of dollars in educational scholarships to a number of deserving students.

This year our fundraising efforts, due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting crippling economic hardships nationwide and internationally, has been challenging. Many of our schools are struggling to operate and as a result the number of students, who desperately need our help, has increased dramatically.  We have to do everything possible to assist them; schools are the backbone of our communities - the heart and soul of our neighborhoods.  So, join us in this endeavor to serve our students as embodied in our motto “Improving Lives Today For A Better Tomorrow”.  Any contribution will be welcomed to reach our goal of $50,000.00.

As is often said in Jamaica, “EVERY MICKLE MEK A MUCKLE,” which means that "small things when combined one by one can have a big effect”.
