Hi, my name is Jesse Burrows and my mother recently passed away on Oct 19th 2023. She was a longtime resident of Depoe Bay who served the community both in her work and on her spare time. Our house was the place people would come for respite. Good advice. A good laugh. Or to hide from the cruelty of the world. Our Thanksgiving table had more community members than blood relatives, and we were so proud of that. The door was always open and everyone knew that. She taught me how to be the finder of lost children. We had many where we lived. She was a longtime waitress of Mo’s in Lincoln City, as well as Mary’s Cafe in Depoe Bay. She became disabled when I was young and it was a devastating experience for both of us. I was 14 and she was about the age I am now at 40. I went into care for her as a caregiver for 18 years. She beat two types of breast cancer having a double mastectomy. She broke several bones being stubbornly independent, including her hip in two places.. nothing could stop her and I know many of us felt she would outlive us all. She barely looked 48 to me when she went. Sometimes when people do something so right, you won’t notice that they’ve done anything at all.. she taught me some very incredible things that I pass on every day. I’m hoping that you also remember the wonderful advice and adventures you shared with her. She was one of a kind. I want to honor her the way she told me she wished we would;
1) A celebration of life in Depoe Bay
2) Being cremated and some ashes dropped from the fishing boats, in our traditional Depoe Bay way
3) The rest of her ashes scattered at her favorite places and maybe some new wonders she never got to see, on a road trip with me. One last ride. (She took me all over the United States in an El Comino with a golden retriever named Leo, over a year of camping and traveling when I was 4. Too young to go to kinder, so she took me on an educational tour I’ll never forget.)
As we know dying is free but the costs of respectfully being put to rest costs more money each day. She didn’t have savings or insurance as we come from a place where those things were lost to a generation or two. So I’m trying to raise the costs below as listed.
•Creamation: $2,600
•Boat Memorial: $500
•Wake at Wing Wa: Undetermined
•Travel Expenses:$300
I know how hard it is right now. I mean literally anything helps. Connections and non-monetary support is always appreciated.
Thank you,
Jesse Burrows
