Join Us Rebuilding Patricia's Life After a Stroke

Dear Family and Friends,

We are heartbroken to share that Patricia Muriel Abadiano – Michel’s mother, Dinorah’s sister, and Anaïs’ aunt – suffered a stroke on August 21st while at home alone in Mexico. During the stroke, she fell and hit her head, which caused a brain hemorrhage.

Since then, Patricia has been hospitalized multiple times (the under-resourced, overburdened public hospital discharged her after several days, but thankfully we were able to find a bed for her at a private facility ). She has undergone a series of life-saving medical procedures, but has lost her speech, is partially paralyzed and is unable to walk or swallow food.

It’s hard to believe that only a month ago, Patricia was celebrating her granddaughter’s second birthday – playing hide and seek with Giovanna, singing songs and smiling ear to ear.

Patricia is now at home, but has a long road ahead – the first 3 to 6 months of recovery, when neuroplasticity is at its strongest and the brain is working to heal and rewire lost connections, are a critical time. Michel and Dinorah have been at Patricia’s side day and night caring for her, but she also needs skilled nursing care and therapists to give her a chance to regain some of her ability to walk, possibly talk and eat.

Unfortunately, the medical bills over the past two weeks alone have created a tremendous financial strain on our family, and we realize that we can’t do this by ourselves – we need your help and the help from others in our communities so we can pay for the vital home care that Patricia desperately needs.

Querida familia y amigos

Les compartimos con mucha tristeza que Patricia Muriel Abadiano – Mamá de Michel, hermana de Dinorah, y tía de Anaïs– sufrió una embolia el 21 de agosto mientras estaba sola en su casa. Durante la embolia, se cayó y se lesionó la cabeza, lo cual le causó un derrame cerebral.

Desde entonces, ha estado hospitalizada varias veces (El hospital público, con pocos recursos, la dio el alta después de varios días, pero afortunadamente pudimos encontrarle una cama en un centro privado). Patricia recibió una serie de procedimientos médicos que le salvaron la vida, pero perdió la habilidad de hablar, está parcialmente paralizada y no puede caminar ni tragar alimentos.

Es difícil creer que hace apenas un mes, Patricia estaba celebrando el segundo cumpleaños de su nieta– jugando a las escondidas con Giovanna, cantando canciones y sonriendo de todo corazón.

Patricia ahora está en casa, pero tiene un largo camino por delante: los primeros 3 a 6 meses de recuperación, cuando la neuroplasticidad está en su punto más fuerte y el cerebro está trabajando para sanar y reconectar las conexiones perdidas, son un momento crítico. Michel y Dinorah han estado al lado de Patricia día y noche cuidándola, pero ella también necesita cuidados de enfermería especializados y terapeutas que le den la oportunidad de recuperar parte de su capacidad para caminar, posiblemente hablar y comer.

Desafortunadamente, las facturas médicas de las últimas dos semanas han creado una tremenda presión financiera para nuestra familia, y nos damos cuenta de que no podemos hacerlo solos: necesitamos su ayuda y la de otros en nuestras comunidades para poder pagar para la atención domiciliaria vital que Patricia necesita desesperadamente.
