Help for a friend- Susannah Melvoin

Donation protected
In the summer of 1998, I met my childhood musical Heroes; Lisa Coleman, Wendy and Susannah Melvoin. Over the years , our relationship has evolved and they’re more like sisters to me, and i’d do anything for them.

I was talking with Susannah about what her musical plans were for the future. But what we ended talking about was the pressures of parenthood, and how much harder that can be as a single parent.  As many of you are probably aware her divorce attracted plenty of unwanted public attention.

During our talk she did express her desires to finish a solo record but it quickly turned back into our parenting talk. Susannah has a flair for telling stories. Listening to her tell those stories, felt like I was sitting around a warm fire, under the stars totally amazed by her. She told me the story on how Starfish and Coffee came about.  I asked her, well, I begged her to let me share it with all the fans of the song. Oddly, she didn’t think people would be interested in her stories.

But, what struck me the most about our talk was her struggles. Hearing the fear in Susannah's voice, talking about trying to keep a roof over her children’s head really stayed with me. Susannah is raising her kids alone. She stays so strong for them, but she struggles to provide, because she has no money.

She didn’t make the last Fdeluxe show in November because although she makes money when the band performs, which is rare, it costs more for her to go away then stay home with her kids. Susannah has given so much to the soundtrack of my life and to so many fans out there with her amazing voice and songwriting gift. She is so talented and has such a gift but the struggle to survive has become the priority over her creative and artistic life. It’s not fair that such a talented artist should have to struggle so hard to survive. She has shown many times her strength to carry on, but this time, why not help her? Why not give back to someone in the music business that has touched our souls with her gift? She is too proud to ask for help, but I am not.  No parent should have to worry about trying to keep a roof over her children's head, yes, it has reached that point.

Susannah’s story and music needs to be heard. her voice should not be silenced because it doesn’t fit into the cookie cutter industry, or lack there of, as it is today. I asked Susannah to tell me more stories, to write them down. I suggested it be a healing process for her. She’s very humble in her words but they are her words written in the way that only she writes. Susannah needs our support.  The story of Starfish and Coffee was brilliantly written about such a beloved song. I shared a lot of the comments with her on what it meant to the fans, she was so moved and in her words... “There’s more where that came from”.

Lets rally behind Susannah, an artist worthy of our support!

I have set up a GoFundMe account for her, and I am respectfully asking for any contribution you feel is appropriate, anything is appreciated.
