East Hampton has been recognized as an area of unusual beauty and natural resources. The Nature Conservancy has designated the area one of the "Last Great Places" in the Western Hemisphere.
In January 2014, PSEG-LI began erecting 267 fifty-five to sixty-one foot utility poles along a 6.2 mile stretch twisting through quaint village streets less than twenty-five feet from children's bedrooms, and along areas of local significant scenic vistas. At first, our fears revolved around the dangers associated with the high-tension wires and the electromagnetic fields they would produce, and the impact it would have on our health and the health of our children.
Since that time, however, we have retained expert witnesses, including a hydrogeologist, who determined that the poles are leaching toxic pentachlorophenol and crude oil into our soil and groundwater. Our properties have been contaminated, devalued and our safety and health have been jeopardized.
NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman stated that, "There is one set of rules for everyone. People are entitled to be safe in their homes, in their schools, and in their communities." PSEG-LIhas failed to respect the health and safety of the residents of East Hampton and Amagansett, as well as other areas across Long Island.
Our organization is standing up for what is right. This is a David and Goliath fight! We have retained Irving Like, the well know and respected legal counsel who helped close the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant, and Professor Leon Friedman from the Hofstra Law School, to challenge LIPA and PSEG.
Our mission is to halt the project, pull the poles and bury the lines along a direct major corridor away from residential neighborhoods.
We need immediate funds to pay for our expert witnesses' affidavits and testimonies, and for our legal counsel.
