Surgeries for Makenna Brown

Donation protected
This fundraiser is for the family of 8 year old Makenna.

On July 3rd a firework fell over and shot out at everyone and Makenna was struck in the eye.
She was taken to Children's Hospital in Dallas and underwent a 3 hour surgery.

They were able to close the wound in the eyeball which will allow the eye to heal but they weren't able to remove all the blood because it's mixed in with the tissue and the line between blood and tissue isn't clear.

The main goal right now is to manage the pain and keep infection at bay because if she gets an infection it can go to the brain. Since the eye socket is fractured, she will require several visits and more surgeries by a special team of surgeons.

If they cannot see any activity, she will need a prosthetic eye.

UPDATE at 7pm July 4th:
Dr Patel was in a little earlier to give Makenna eye drops. The eyeball is really swollen but was moving when Mak moved her eye. He said the muscles were in good condition which is promising. Tomorrow he will see if Mak can see any kind of light at all through her eye. If so then that's promising that things are somewhat intact. If not, then we will discuss steps from there.
Thank you for all the continued prayers and support. We are blessed to have so many friends.

UPDATE 2:
She will be on bed rest when we get home and we have to administer 3 different eye drops in five minute intervals 4 times a day. As of right now we should be home sometime tonight. In two weeks she will have her second surgery which will either be repairing the fractured eye socket, or removing the eye, replacing with a prosthetic and repairing the fractured eye socket. I don't know anything beyond that at this point. Thank you for continuing to pray for our little girl.

UPDATE 3:
Eye doctor came in earlier today to exam Makenna's eye. Still hard to tell for sure the damage. The eye is just too swollen for him to see inside with microscope. Plus with her socket fractured it really tender and difficult to open the lids very far. We still have hope that she is still seeing some sort of light with the eye. Will know more after swelling goes down and can get a better exam.

UPDATE 4:
Three specialists looked at her eye after discharge. They cannot make out anything inside the eye. We may have to consider removal of the eye. However, a retina specialist will examine her on Friday. That gives us a couple days for swelling to go down and we're praying for better news. The blood in the eye will hopefully clear up and they can see inside the eye better. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers. I would like to ask to keep praying.

UPDATE 5:
Makenna has an appointment at 8 am Friday with a retinal specialist for a sonogram of her eye. We will know more after the exam. We appreciate your prayers that she will show signs of life in her eye.

UPDATE 6
After this morning's sonogram, it was decided Makenna should be scheduled for surgery Monday. They will take her eye, fix the fracture and put in a place holder until the prosthetic is ready. Your support is so greatly appreciated. Thank you for continuing to follow our journey.

UPDATE 7
From Corey:
After examining and doing an ultrasound on Makenna's eye this morning, it's too damaged to be able to save. She will have surgery Monday morning to remove the eye and repair the fractured socket. Soon following she will be fitted for her prosthesis. We are shopping now for her some hello kitty glasses with shatter proof lenses to protect her good eye. We are truly blessed that she is still healthy and in good spirits and to have the support we have and all the prayers. Still a long journey ahead of us but with GOD'S help we will endure
