To know her was to love her …

Mariah Brooke Norris, age 12, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Riley Children's Hospital, after suffering a stroke. She took her last breath surrounded by those that loved her. Mariah’s medical journey began on Thanksgiving Day, 2021. It was then that Mariah became ill and required emergency care. During her medical treatment, a head CT scan revealed that Mariah had a brain tumor.

Mariah was the epitome of a true fighter and a courageous warrior. She experienced multiple hospitalizations, radiation treatments, and several surgeries, as a patient at Riley Children’s Hospital and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Through it all, Mariah displayed bravery in the face of adversity and was truly an inspiration to many.

Her life was not an easy journey, but a journey she embarked upon with unstoppable determination and awe-inspiring courage. Mariah taught us the importance of resilience, the power of hope, and the beauty of life. Her life was not a slow march, but a spirited dance.

Mariah found joy in the simplest of things. She loved animals and all things colorful, girlie, sparkly, and frilly. She enjoyed dining at her favorite places, Olive Garden and Red Lobster. A ray of sunshine, who enriched the lives of others, by her mere presence. Many adored her smile and radiant cheerfulness. She shared kindness towards others, always making others feel valued and important. Mariah was a vibrant spirit, a beacon of love, of strength, of inspiration.

In recounting her legacy, Mariah gave the ultimate gift, sharing life as a donor hero. Through organ donation, Mariah’s kidneys saved the lives of two men. What did we learn from her untimely death? She taught us many things in death and through innocent wisdom. Mariah taught us that we can be united in grief and in love. She taught us to share kindness and emulate grace towards others. She taught us the meaning of unwavering resilience and steadfast courage. Most of all, she lived life according to her favorite quote, that “Life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful.”

It is deeply distressing when a child dies. When a child dies, we mourn not only the life that was, but the life that might have been. Her departure has left an irreplaceable void, but her light will forever shine bright in our hearts. Those left behind are navigating their new reality of loss and profound change.

The bereaved are not alone. Let us remember Mariah not with sadness, but with the joy she brought into our lives. Let us remember the lessons she taught us and the love she shared with us. In doing so, you will honor our sweet girl and her big-hearted legacy.

This campaign was established to help Mariah’s family with her final expenses. Your consideration, in extending a donation, is greatly appreciated. All donations will help make a difference. Thank you for your love and support shown to Mariah throughout her journey. Please keep the family and her siblings in your thoughts and prayers. A celebration of life is being planned.
