Mason the Super Hero and his battle with Cancer

Donation protected
In 2018 Alex and her husband Hugh got the horrible news that their 17-month-old son, Mason, had a tumour under his eye and in an instant, surgery was booked. After more test’s, doctors realised the tumour had its own blood supply, and it would be too dangerous for them to operate on with the size it was. This in turn lead to efforts to shrink the tumour.

On the 5th of February 2019, Mason went into surgery to remove the tumour. That’s when they were informed the cancer had spread into his orbital bone. Chemotherapy started four days later. After a few weeks it looked like the chemo was working as Masons eye was looking better. At the end of March 2019, Mason’s eye begun to flair up again. So began round two of Chemo and more tests.

On the 9Th of August, 2019 Mason was rushed to hospital. Unable to stop him throwing up they were worried the cancer had spread to his brain. After continuous tests, it was found that Mason’s Cancer had spread. There were three tumours in the space between his brain and skull and it was on his lungs, right arm and leg. They then started round three of Chemotherapy.

23rd of August 2019 after feeling sick, Alex herself went to the doctor. Many tests later, she was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. On the 10th of September 2019, Alex went into surgery. During her own recovery, Alex was supporting Mason through his Chemotherapy sessions with Hugh by their side.

In February 2020, when the COVID-19 started causing concern, Alex and Hugh got the news that Mason’s cancer had continued to spread. There with more tumours appearing in his brain, lungs, legs, spine and pelvis. Heartbroken, they began round four. Because Mason was in more intense Chemotherapy, he needed to stay in hospital for the entire length of his treatment treatment.

On the 6th of August 2020, I recieved a message from Alex informing me that they were packing up the apartment as they had to move. Alex also informed me that they had nowhere to go but, in her words, ‘at least its warm up here now, we will camp at mum and dads’.  Alex’s mum and dad live in a tiny apartment and while they have been an incredible support to the family, they have been through their own battles.

Alex, Hugh and Mason are some of the strongest people I know. Although I am stuck in stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne and they are currently in Queensland, I am determined to help. This family keeps getting up after every knockback. They are kind and genuine people who just need a break. I am hoping to raise enough money to go towards a bond on a house and surprise them. Although, I understand this is a hard time for everyone, if you have any spare change to put towards this good cause, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
