Hi, my name is Emma Cahill. The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise money for my brother Cian to receive stem cell therapy in Costa Rica in an attempt to combat and repair some of the damage done to his joints as a result of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and relieve some of the life altering pain which Cian is currently dealing with on a daily basis.

In 2010, at just 18 years of age, Cian was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of Rheumatoid Arthritis - a diagnosis which is quite rare amongst someone as young as Cian. Although Cian had some success with traditional methods of treatment since his diagnosis in 2010, in September 2021 Cian’s body stopped responding to them, leading to a series of aggressive flare-ups that have turned Cian's world upside down, resulting in him having to take an extended medical leave of absence from work. Cian has suffered permanent joint damage in both wrists, his bones are now pressing against each other and rupturing tendons leaving him in chronic pain and unable to effectively use his wrist. His fingers have also required surgery for tendon realignment, and he likely will eventually need one or both wrists fused at the rate the disease progresses. In addition, the inflammation has now spread to his knees, ankles, and elbows.

Given the increasing prevalence of the disease and considering that all of the other treatments have failed after consulting with specialists at research hospitals across both the US & Europe, Cian is going to undergo stem cell therapy in Costa Rica in an attempt to regain control against this disease and avoid a future which looks to rob him of his career and ability to care for himself. Funds raised will be used to offset medical expenses not covered by insurance and other programs (e.g., cost of Stem cell therapy intraarticular and intravenous injections )

One final note: Although it took some persuading as Cian has always prided himself on being fiercely independent, he allowed me to start this fundraiser on his behalf when I explained to him he should not suffer in silence and people would want to help him get through this difficult time, especially for one so young, and for someone that I know has made a positive impact on so many.
