Michael Hess's Road to Recovery

I wanted to share a story about a near and dear friend of mine for over 30 years. Two weeks ago, Mike Hess got out of the shower and asked his wife Maureen for a towel. He suddenly suffered a massive heart attack. He had to be resuscitated four times when the ambulance arrived.
Once he got to the hospital, they had to put him in an induced coma. He suffered injuries from falling and an had an infection in his lung. Within a few days, they took him out of the coma and off of the pain medication to gauge his mental awareness and get him in stable condition.
Maureen and his family never left his side. The doctors told them they would run tests to see if there was any kind of brain damage. The doctors also told them it would take time before they would see if his memory would come back. One of the first things Mike was trying to say to the Doctor was that he had super powers.
For the first time in days everyone laughed. Well, we think that Mike may have some kind of super power, because within the last few days he has hit many milestones that weren't expected.
He started to slowly move his arms, legs and whisper a few words. Then he was able to sit up, then stand and take a few steps. It brought tears to everyone's eyes. They removed the feeding tube and he was able to eat meatballs and he very happy about that. Mike is recognizing familiar faces and having some memories come back. He is making slow but steady progress.
There are a few more procedures to go through, but he is happy to know he will soon be getting out of the hospital and into a rehabilitation center. He will be receiving occupational therapy, physical therapy, and help with memory recollection.
Mike and Maureen have been in love for over 20 years. They have a long journey ahead of them. They have 2 beautiful girls; Tracy and Brianna, who have been so strong through all of this. Maureen has been caring for the elderly for many years and just recently started her own Long Island based home companion business. She has been at the hospital around the clock and has been trying to keep the business afloat.
Mike's friends have been trying to keep his landscaping business going as well. They are in dire need of help from all of us to at least get them through the next few weeks. Mike is still not out of the woods just yet. He has a long road to recovery left.
I deeply hope we can pull some money together to help Mike and Maureen and their children while they concentrate on his recovery. She has helped so many families during their most traumatic stage of their lives (including my own). Let's help Mike get his "super powers" fully restored.
Sincerely,
Karena Kent
