Yoga for Inner City Schools/Youth

Tax deductible
MINDFULNESS THROUGH MOVEMENT (“MTM”) offers mindfulness and yoga programs to urban/innercity youth in Philadelphia, PA. Our mission is “to offer kids tools to help them face life” and a goal of “cultivating steady minds and bodies to improve lives and communities.” Schools who participate in MTM programming for the 2018-2019 school year can apply for a one-year Program that includes two-weekly classes for 28 weeks for its students. This Program is recommended for children in grades 4, 5 and 6, although the curriculum has proved effective for ages 7-18. MTM is a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code.

BACKGROUND.  In 2014,  Cheryl Nichols and Cara Bradley,  recognized that a mindfulness based yoga program could offer children an important set of self empowerment tools especially children in inner city schools where many children live with significant stress.  They also recognize that in order create any substantial program, Mindfulness through Movement would been certified yoga teachers that could be committed to a program for a full school year. Currently, MTM provides school year programming to over 1,150 students per week from first grade through high school juniors.  Inner city schools currently benefiting from this program are: St. Rose of Lima, Overbrook Educational Center, Cornerstone Christian Academy, Gesu School, Hope Partnership for Education, St. Helena Incarnation, St. Cyril of Alexandria, GLA West and Southwest, Christo Rey High School,  West Catholic High School, St. Frances Cabrini, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Martin de Porres.

MTM teaches a combination of yoga, mindfulness meditation, centering, and breath work that empowers students with skills for peaceful conflict resolution, improved focus and concentration, greater control and awareness of thoughts and emotions, anger management and overall stress reduction.  Studies show that such a program provides children with an important set of self-regulation tools that increase awareness of their empathetic abilities.

FUNDRAISING/COSTS— Our budget for the 2018-2019 school year is $30,000.   One Program of 2 classes taught in a single day with one teacher is $2,000 per year.  Fundraising is ongoing in order to staff certified yoga teachers, pay administrative costs and  purchase equipment.

The following quote is from Sister Nancy Fitzgerald, former principal of St. Martin de Porres:

“The mindfulness program at St. Martin de Porres is life-changing. When I go by and see 25-28 ‘formerly squirming’ 3rd and 4th graders actively engage their practice, it gives me such hope for the future. There is not enough quiet in today’s culture to ground oneself.  I am so grateful for our program here.”
