Mural for Mel

Our late & dear friend Melvin Wilson had a singular devotion to music & the guitar. A native Texan, Melvin made his way to Canada via California in the early 1970`s. Along with his compadres of the time, Melvin journeyed to Alberta where gigs were plentiful & soon established his presence in the Alberta music scene. Melvin played guitar with many of the greats including Wilf Carter & Ian Tyson. In the decades before his untimely passing, Mel contributed his considerable talents to many regional bands.
Mel began teaching guitar in the 1980`s & later established his teaching studio in High River. He was always willing to share his vast knowledge with students & peers alike. It`s been a joy to encounter the many former students who have experienced the pleasure of playing guitar through lessons with Melvin.
Melvin was a “midnight philosopher”, a fly fisherman on the Highwood River of southern Alberta, a devoted father to Jason & Lisa, a great friend to many, and a music educator who made a significant contribution to the cultural fabric of the Foothills community.
The noted High River artist, Don Hamm, has offered his talents to creating a memorial mural for Melvin in downtown High River.
