Drucilla's Fight

Donation protected
Drucilla Ronchen. A free spirit. Full of life. She is the type of person who will not allow anything to stop her from living! “Living an energetic life means more than just increasing physical activity and stamina. It means being alert and interested, excited and stimulated by life and its possibilities. It means recapturing that feeling of being alive that she has when she is very young, and young at heart” author unknown.

Drucilla loves her two boys: Andrew, who lives in Illinois, and Nate, who lives in New York along with her baby granddaughter. Drucilla often travels to visit family in Ohio where a sister and sister-in-law resides, as well as New York. Family is very important to Drucilla.

She is quite the social butterfly.  She will talk with everyone in the room. Loves to share stories about her travels and experiences in life, be it from a few minutes ago, a few days ago, or several years ago. She is very involved with the Deaf European American Association of Chicago(DEAAC) organization, was a coordinator for Duppies Night, a deaf monthly social event, and attends as many deaf events as she possibly can.

Showing people the world, DeafBlind people in particular, is important to Drucilla. Which is why she really enjoys working as a Support Services Provider (SSSP) for a DeafBlind client, Mindy Mayer. She wants to share the world and its environment, as the DeafBlind do not see the world the way sighted people do.

Drucilla’s career has spanned 35 years, starting out at Northwestern University, then followed the program to University of Chicago. Starting out as a researcher, she became a part-time American Sign Language)ASL) instructor, eventually becaming full-time, earning her a position as a staff member.

She doesn’t sit still for too long. She adores traveling, having been to 49 states! Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, are the remaining states. Drucilla has traveled through almost all of Canada, has been to South America, Europe, Japan, India, and part of Thailand. Her favorite country is Nepal because she feels at peace there, and enjoys teaching ASL when she visits.

Drucilla was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer in her left breast, and is still undergoing diagnosis on her right. Once chemotherapy is completed, Drucilla will have a masectomy to remove her breasts.

While insurance is covering many of her bills, they are not covering 100% of expenses. Missed work due to chemotherapy is making an impact, and Drucilla could use help covering her share of expenses.
