Publishing Battleground: Grandview

The purpose of this fundraising is to publish a book called "Battleground: Grandview".
This book is focused on the delivery of a Community Plan for the district of east Vancouver known as Grandview Woodland, and I use the Grandview Woodland Community Plan (2011-2016), the Vision Vancouver City Hall regime’s desire for constant growth, and the power of the City of Vancouver Planning Department as characters in a case study to illustrate the wider issues of the public’s role in city management.
This is a history of a major government event as experienced by an activist participant and makes use of a significant body of writings created as the events unfolded.
This is not another book about housing theory, nor about building form or urbanism in general, nor about the devastating unaffordability of real estate in Vancouver; though all these issues play their part in the telling. It is a book about the day-to-day politics that govern our city through the actions of unelected staff. It is about the processes by which those politics and policies are defined and implemented for and to the people in your neighbourhood. It is also a book about what can and what cannot be accomplished by volunteers within a system that is designed to stack the deck against local interests.
The book will be published as a 288-page paperback. The book is completed and will be published as soon as funds are raised. Your support will allow this story to reach a wide audience and, hopefully, inspire others to protect their own neighbourhoods against the ravages of unwanted but City-supported development and gentrification.
All funds raised will be used for printing, shipping, and distribution costs. Each donation of $30 or more will be rewarded with a signed copy of the book.
