Brandon Bellis' Eagle Scout Project

Hello. My name is Brandon Bellis, and I am a member of Scout Troop 279 in Mechanicsburg, PA. For my Eagle Scout Project, I am working with the Hampden Township Veterans Recognition Committee of Mechanicsburg, PA to install a nuclear attack submarine anchor display at the CAPT Leon Lock Veterans Memorial Park in Enola, PA. The purpose of my project would be for the recognition of our Veterans and that the project will be located at the Hampden Township Veterans Park. The picture above is my rendition of what it will look like at the park. The anchor is being donated by the U.S. Navy and it will be coming from the recently decommissioned nuclear attack submarine USS CHICAGO (SSN-721). I decided to do this project because I grew up in a military family and wanted to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our great nation and to remind everyone of the sacrifices that our military members have made defending our freedoms. My project consists of transporting the anchor and anchor chain from Bangor, Washington to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, getting them sandblasted and painted, then mounting them for display at the Veterans Memorial Park. At the park, I will need to excavate the foundation and pour in 5 cubic yards of cement, create and install an information placard, install a paver walkway, and add a recycled plastics park bench. I plan to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Veterans Day this year, November 11th, 2023 for the display. The cost of this project is $18,000, of which $12,000 has already been committed for donation so far by several companies. Therefore, I will need to raise $6,000 to complete my project.
