The Outliers: FIRST Robotics Team
Donation protected
A group of high school students had an innovative idea—starting a community FIRST robotics team that would bring together area students at Portland, Maine’s STEM-focused public charter high school, Baxter Academy for Technology and Science.
Working together, students from Cheverus High and Baxter Academy have turned that idea into a reality:
Their rookie team, the Outliers, charged to championship wins in its first two outings—at the New England district competition in Massachusetts and in Lewiston. It emerged as the top-ranked Maine team and is currently 3rd overall in New England. The Outliers team has also won the judges’ Rookie Inspiration Award, the Rookie AllStar award, as well as the Highest Seed Rookie. It has been widely hailed as a “powerhouse rookie.” As a result of this early success, the Outlier teammates now face a
task almost as daunting as engineering a robot that can transport and stack storage containers and recycling barrels. The students must raise money to support the team’s bid to compete in the regional tournament in
Worcester, Massachusetts—and, if their robot proves worthy, to attend the national competition in St. Louis. The Outlier team has proven it is here to succeed. The team now seeks long-term sponsors and partnerships to build a robotics program that will continue to bring together young engineers and programmers to work in unison— and to truly create robust crosscommunity alliances that will be an
invaluable resource for long-term STEM opportunity—and excellence— across southern Maine.
