Restoration - San Felipe de Neri Church steeples

We are the Historic Old Town Association and raising funds to restore the San Felipe de Neri Church steeples (cupola).

History:

Although the church has been around since the late 1700's, the steeples were erected in the mid-1800s after a restoration project led by archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The current steeple design of San Felipe de Neri dates back to this time period.

Deterioration of the Steeples:

Although many maintenance projects have taken place over the past 170 years, the steeples and specifically the crosses have deteriorated to a point where the crosses had to be removed for fear that they would be lost entirely if they were to fall.

Removal of the Crosses - June 25th:

On June 25th, the Bernalillo County Fire Department together with San Felipe de Neri Church removed the crosses for fear of further damage.

Restoration:

The Historic Old Town Association along with San Felipe de Neri church are raising funds to go towards a full historical renovation of the steeples and crosses. This is a very large project as it has been many decades since there has been a full restoration.

Where will your money go?

Your money will be held in trust with the Historic Old Town Association, which is managed by a volunteer board made up of residents, property owners, and merchants within the Old Town Albuquerque Historic overlay zone. We are a non-profit civic association (currently awaiting the final designation of a 501(c)(4)). Your money will be specifically set-aside to ensure that it will ONLY be used to pay vendors for the restoration of the church steeples and associated restoration costs. The money will not be used for any other purposes. Right now, we are aiming to raise $90k. If for some reason the restoration costs less than the amount raised, we will earmark the extra funds for any future exterior renovations for San Felipe de Neri church in Old Town Albuquerque.
