Saving Grace! Adopting Grace, the Kiger Mustang
Donation protected
Grace, a beautiful Kiger mustang needs your help!
We are fundraising to cover her adoption fees, board, care, and her first farrier visit in 3 years.
Grace is trained for liberty groundwork and is an excellent example of the trust and training that can develop between horse and human. She has a strong affinity for connecting with humans -- and shows high interest for Equine Therapy and Horse Constellation work!
Grace's Story
Last year, Grace colicked badly one night. She was being walked all night to health, but her bonded partner-horse also colicked and sadly died the same night. Shortly after, her owner surrendered her to the American Legend Mustangs, who have cared for her since while looking to place her with a her permanent home. With your help, we can take her in and bring her back to health.
She's in need of a weight gain program and training sessions to build her health and stamina back, as well as regular farrier visits and a full vet check.
[Even in the recent Southern California rains, she seeks out the humans for connection!]
Kiger Mustangs
Grace is a very special breed called the Kiger Mustang.
This herd was discovered wild in Southeast Oregon in 1977, when there were just rumours of a "more pure" herd of mustangs somewhere in the wild. Now DNA testing has proven Kiger Mustangs to be direct descendants of Spanish horses brought to the Americas in the 1700s!
Prior to finding the Kigers, it was thought that while the mustang was descended from Spanish horses, they had been mixed with many other breeds and the primitive traits had been lost.
These special mustangs have typical dun coloring, a dark stripe down their spines and zebra-stripes along their legs -- and were even the inspiration for Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron Disney movie!
Grace is a red dun, with an extravagant mane, a dark dorsal stripe and her summer coat even shows her zebra stripes on her front legs!
Your help rescuing Grace and helping her along her path to becoming trained to work with humans in therapeutic capacities can make such a difference. We look forward to introducing her to many who can benefit from working with her!
For donations of $100 or more, we're happy to arrange for visits to spend time and have a session with her in Ojai, CA.
Thank you so much!
[She's tiny but mighty! And has endured so much.]
