My name is Sangjienben. I was born and raised in Tibet and I am the owner of Lhasa Fast Food on 74th st in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY.
On March 5th, 2021, a fire started in the building where my restaurant is located and completely destroyed Lhasa Fast Food.
Since I started this small restaurant in 2012, nearly a 100 different people have worked for and with me, providing homestyle specialties that won attention from food writers , travelers , loyal and diverse local diners .
Waiting lines out the door were common as well as catering service orders for special events. We prepared our food with a deep sense of responsibility and love, and this love has been reflected back from our patrons over the last decade or until this COVID-19 pandemic hit the city.
Lhasa Fast Food on 74th Street survived relatively well with takeout and special orders in the heart of Jackson Heights. While the rate of vaccination against COVID-19 and spring brought a new hope to the city, March 5th fire dashed Lhasa Fast Food's hope.
Prospects for insurance payouts and/or rebuilding soon in Jackson Heights are not looking good, and the complexity of the big building’s ownership and business subletting is expected to take a very long time to sort out.
Jackson Heights is one of the world’s most diverse neighborhoods where every culture brings their best food to the world. It is both a major community center and NYC tourist attraction. It is a very important base where my cultural heritage thrives and presents itself through traditional cuisine and hospitality to fellow Americans and travelers from around the world.
My success there secured life for my family and allowed me to be a part of a diverse and productive business community contributing to the NYC economy and employment opportunity for others.
Wonderful friends and community members have expressed their concern and urged the set up of this “GoFundMe” page.
With your help, we can re-establish a main kitchen location in this home community and make a comeback.
