Saving Newborn Babies From HIV AIDS in Ecuador
Donation protected
Since 2006, Fundacion VIHDA has performed over 430,000 HIV tests among pregnant women, detected and successfully treated over 3,000 expecting mothers so that their newborn babies can be born healthy and HIV-free. To date their babies continue to be HIV-free.
As the included interview from the BBC states: "Giving medication to a newborn is no easy feat. But now, a new design - in the form of a pouch - could make life simpler. Babies born to HIV-positive mothers need to have daily antiretroviral medication for the first few weeks of life. This dramatically reduces their chances of acquiring the disease…. Now a new method, the Pratt Pouch, is being used in Ecuador, which will save both time and lives."
Dr. Robert Malkin and his team from Duke University, led by Sebastian Baquerizo, implemented the Pratt Pouch in Ecuador and performed the first ever human trial of this innovative medicine delivery method. Since it’s launch, the Pratt Pouch has been used in saving over 1,500 newborn babies from contracting HIV in Ecuador.
To continue our program in 2022, we need to raise $9,500 to purchase 15,000 Pratt Pouches to be used in the 3 largest public Maternity Hospitals where Fundacion VIHDA works together with the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health. On average, each baby needs 80 pouches with medication to become HIV free after birth - this means that for only $50, you can buy enough Pratt Pouches to save a newborn’s life.
Please contribute to our cause and help us save newborn babies from HIV/AIDS during pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding.
All the best,
