Save the Marine Discovery Centre
Keeping the Marine Discovery Centre afloat in the midst of COVID-19
The Marine Discovery Centre, an educational facility home to several South Australian marine creatures, has felt the repercussions of closing its doors, financially. The centre is calling for your support. Given limited government funding, it is struggling to get by. Feeding the marine life, keeping the tanks running and keeping the lights on are all aspects of the centre that would benefit from your generous donations.
The Marine Discovery Centre (MDC), located in Henley Beach, is the only coastal and marine educational facility for primary school-aged children and the broader community in South Australia. It has been an excursion destination for schools for 21 years, but since the COVID-19 broke out, the centre has had to close its doors to schools and cancel larger events impacting its outlook.
The catastrophic weather conditions in December and January also had a further negative impact on the centre with many vacation care groups cancelling their excursions due to their hot weather policies.
To assist educators and students, the centre has established online educational resources to still provide learning opportunities > https://www.marinediscoverycentre.com.au/education.
In the last 12 months, the Marine Discovery Centre has just completed an upgrade of its facilities, curriculum and education programs and was now in the process of sourcing sponsorship for event-based activities. In this current market that has been deemed an almost impossible task as other businesses are also feeling the pinch.
The Marine Discovery Centre features interactive learning stations covering topics such as climate change, sustainable fishing, responsible water use, Aboriginal culture and the importance of preserving our marine environment. The aquariums feature local marine wildlife species and the team provide engaging beachside marine trails to complement the Centre’s indoor educational activities.
The MDC hosts more than 7000 students from more than 100 schools each year, in addition to vacation care programs during the school holidays and public events on the weekend. Over the past 21 years, the Marine Discovery Centre has been a significant local institution, providing an interesting and innovative approach to education about marine life and conservation to school children - an education program that is not offered anywhere else in South Australia. Through continued support from committee members, numerous volunteers and community organisations, the Centre’s impact has continued to grow. Without this continued support or sourcing required sponsorship now, the centre will not be in a financial position to remain open. When the schools are ready to return, the MDC may not be there.
It would be an unfortunate loss to the state and our children should the centre have to close permanently due to finances as a result of the COVID-19 virus.
We thank you for your support if you choose to donate to our cause, us and our creatures and sincerely thank you.
